How to Calculate the Correct Amount of Wall Plaster Needed

How to Calculate the Amount of Cement and Sand Needed for Wall Plastering

Have you ever been unsure about how much cement and sand to prepare for plastering a wall?

If too little material is purchased, work may come to a halt while waiting for additional supplies. Conversely, if too much is purchased, there may be leftover material, and the cost of the project will rise accordingly.

Therefore, Milanians need to know how to calculate the amount of plaster needed for their walls from the start. The calculation isn’t actually complicated once you understand the formula from the beginning.

Want to know how much cement and sand you’ll need for plastering the walls on the Milanians project? Let’s find out more below!

Why Are Cement and Sand Calculations Important for Wall Plastering?

Calculating the amount of cement and sand needed helps Milanians determine the quantity of materials more accurately before work begins.

A large surface area naturally requires more material, while the thickness of the plaster also directly affects the volume of mortar needed.

Accurate calculations also help control costs. Material purchases can be adjusted to actual needs, thereby minimizing the risk of shortages or surpluses of cement and sand.

For contractors and other professionals, these calculations also make it easier to determine material requirements and estimate the scope of work.

In addition to the amount of material, calculating the amount of plaster needed for walls requires consideration of the mortar’s composition. Too little cement can result in weaker plaster, while using too much cement does not necessarily yield better results, as the mixture is also influenced by sand, water, thickness, and surface conditions.

Preparations Before Calculating Wall Plaster Requirements

1. Determine the Type of Plaster to Be Used

First, determine whether the plaster will be used on interior or exterior walls, in damp areas, or on specific surfaces such as concrete and brick. The type of job will influence the choice of cement and sand mixture.

For calculations based on Based on SNI 2837:2008, mix ratios of 1:4, 1:5, and 1:6 can be used as a basis for estimating material requirements for plastering with a thickness of approximately 15 mm.

2. Measure the Area of the Wall or Surface to Be Plastered

Measure the length and height of the wall, then multiply the two.

Formula: Wall area = length × height

If there are doors, windows, or other openings, their area can be subtracted from the total wall area so that the material requirements more closely reflect actual conditions.

3. Determine the Thickness of the Plaster

The thickness of the plaster determines the volume of mortar required. Therefore, this factor must not be overlooked when calculating the amount of plaster needed for a wall.

For example, a 15-mm-thick layer of plaster—or 0.015 meters—has a smaller volume than a 20-mm-thick layer of plaster covering the same area.

Try to keep the thickness relatively even. Plaster that is too thick in one area can increase material consumption and potentially cause problems during the drying process.

4. Choose Based on the Type of Wall Material

The surfaces of red brick, lightweight brick, concrete, or other materials may have different characteristics. Absorbency, flatness, and surface condition will affect the mortar requirements and the application process.

Therefore, the calculated figures should serve as a basis for estimation, not as absolute values applicable to all on-site conditions. This step must also be considered in conjunction with the method for calculating wall plastering requirements.

Proportional Composition of Cement and Sand Mixtures Based on SNI

For 15-mm-thick plaster, a commonly used reference from SNI 2837:2008 provides the material requirements per square meter for the following compositions.

1. Cement-to-Sand Ratio of 1:4

A 1:4 mix means 1 part cement mixed with 4 parts sand based on the mixture ratio. It requires about 6.24 kg of cement per m² and 0.024 m³ of sand per m².

For example, for a 20 m² wall:

  • Cement = 20 × 6.24 = 124.8 kg
  • Sand = 20 × 0.024 = 0.48 m³

So, since one 50-kg bag of cement is needed, you’ll need about three bags of cement to plaster a 20 m² wall.

2. A 1:5 Ratio of Cement to Sand

For a 1:5 mix, the material requirements are approximately 5.18 kg of cement and 0.026 m³ of sand per m².

For a 20 m² wall:

  • Cement = 20 × 5.18 = 103.6 kg
  • Sand = 20 × 0.026 = 0.52 m³

So, since one 50-kg bag of cement is needed, you’ll need about three bags of cement to plaster a 20 m² wall.

3. Cement-to-Sand Ratio of 1:6

A 1:6 mix requires about 4.42 kg of cement and 0.027 m³ of sand per m².

For a 20 m² wall:

  • Cement = 20 × 4.42 = 88.4 kg
  • Sand = 20 × 0.027 = 0.54 m³

So, since one 50-kg bag of cement is needed, you’ll need about two bags of cement to plaster a 20 m² wall.

This figure represents the required amount based on the coefficient per square meter for a thickness of 15 mm. If the thickness or job conditions differ, the actual amount required must be adjusted.

Formula for Calculating Cement and Sand Requirements for Plastering

Simply put, you can calculate the amount of plaster needed for a wall by multiplying the surface area by the material requirement per square meter.

  • Cement requirement: Wall area × cement requirement per m²
  • Sand requirement: Wall area × sand requirement per m²

For volume-based calculations, use:

  • Volume of plaster = length × height × thickness

For example, a wall with an area of 40 m² and a thickness of 15 mm:

40 × 0.015 = 0.60 m³ of wet plaster volume.

A volume of 0.60 m³ is the total volume of the plaster, which consists of cement, sand, water, and air pockets that subsequently change in volume after mixing and drying.

After that, the material requirements can be calculated based on the selected mix ratio.

Here is an example of how to calculate the mixing ratio:

For a 1:4 mixture:

  • Cement = 6.24 kg/m²
  • Sand = 0.024 m³/m²

With a wall area of 40 m², the calculation is as follows:

  • Cement = 40 × 6.24 = 249.6 kg ≈ 5 sacks (50 kg)
  • Sand = 40 × 0.024 = 0.96 m³

So, for a 40 m² wall with 15 mm of plaster and a 1:4 mix ratio → about 5 bags of 50 kg cement + 0.96 m³ of sand.

How to Calculate the Amount of Plaster Needed for Walls

How to Calculate Wall Plaster Requirements

1. Calculate the Volume of Plaster on the Walls

First, determine the surface area, then multiply it by the thickness of the plaster.

Formula: Volume = wall area × plaster thickness

Example:

40 m² × 0.015 m = 0.60 m³.

2. Calculate the Total Raw Materials Used

Use the cement and sand requirement coefficients according to the composition. For example, use a 1:5 mixture:

Cement:
40 × 5.18 = 207.2 kg

Sand:
40 × 0.026 = 1.04 m³

3. Determine the Composition Ratios of the Material Mixture

A ratio of 1:4, 1:5, or 1:6 does not mean that the amounts of cement and sand can be chosen arbitrarily. Select the mix based on the requirements of the job, surface conditions, and applicable specifications.

For example, if using a 1:5 mix for 40 m², the basic requirements are 207.2 kg of cement and 1.04 m³ of sand at a thickness of 15 mm.

4. Calculating Material Loss During Application

Not all of the material on-site is used to make 100% plaster. Some may be wasted during mixing, transport, or application, or as a result of leftover mixture.

To prepare for this, Milanians can Add approximately 5–10%, depending on the job conditions.

If the cement requirement is 207.2 kg and the 10% reserve is used:

207.2 × 1.10 = 227.92 kg

Therefore, the amount of cement needed can be rounded to approximately 228 kg.

Complete Example of Calculating Cement and Sand Requirements for Plastering

For example, the Milanians will plaster the walls with:

  • Wall length: 8 m
  • Wall height: 4 m
  • Wall area: 8 × 4 = 32 m²
  • Plaster thickness: 15 mm
  • Composition: 1 part cement to 5 parts sand
  • Cement requirement: 5.18 kg/m²
  • Sand requirement: 0.026 m³/m²
  • Material stock: 10%

Therefore:

  • Basic cement requirement = 32 × 5.18 = 165.76 kg
  • Cement + reserve 10% = 165.76 × 1.10 = 182.34 kg
  • If using cement at 40 kg per bag = 182.34 ÷ 40 = 4.56 bags
  • Base sand requirement = 32 × 0.026 = 0.832 m³
  • Sand + reserve 10% = 0.832 × 1.10 = 0.915 m³

Therefore, the material requirements can be rounded to approximately 5 40-kg bags of cement and 0.92 m³ of sand.

How Much Cement and Sand Are Needed for Plastering per m²?

For a 15-mm-thick plaster layer, the requirements based on those guidelines are:

CompositionCement per square meterSand per square meter
1:46.24 kg0.024 m³
1:55.18 kg0.026 m³
1:64.42 kg0.027 m³

This figure can be used as an initial reference for calculating material requirements. The larger the area to be plastered, the greater the total material requirement.

Actual thickness, wall condition, application method, and material loss must still be taken into account when determining the purchase quantity.

What Happens If the Proportions of Cement and Sand for Plaster Are Incorrect?

Incorrect proportions can affect the quality and durability of the plaster. Possible problems include:

  • Plaster cracks easily
  • The surface flakes off or peels easily
  • Adhesion to walls is poor
  • The surface is difficult to level
  • Material usage has become more wasteful
  • The project took longer to complete
  • The final finish on the wall isn't very neat
  • The risk of repairs and rework increases

Therefore, calculating the requirements for wall plastering isn’t just a matter of knowing the amount of cement and sand, but also of ensuring that the mixture and the application process meet the needs of the job.

How to Make a Wall Plaster Mix That Won’t Easily Crumble

1. Use High-Quality Sand and Cement

Use cement that is still in good condition and sand that is suitable for plastering work. The sand should be free of soil, mud, debris, and organic material that could compromise the quality of the mortar.

The quality of the base materials greatly determines the consistency of the mixture. Unsuitable materials can make it difficult for the plaster to achieve the desired density and adhesion.

2. Make Sure the Proportions Are Correct

Don’t determine the measurements based solely on estimates. Use consistent measuring tools to ensure that the cement-to-sand ratio remains the same from one batch to the next.

This consistency is important to ensure that the characteristics of the mortar remain stable throughout the project.

3. Add the Cement Mix Ingredients

In addition to cement, sand, and water, cement additives can be used to help improve the quality of the mortar. Their functions may include increasing adhesion, helping to retain water in the mortar, and reducing the risk of cracking in the finished plaster.

To meet those needs, Milanians may want to consider Milan Cement Additive, which is formulated as an additive for cement to help reduce the risk of cracking in plaster and render.

The reason is that Milan Cement Additive is designed to help improve adhesion and produce a stronger, more durable surface.

4. Apply the Plaster to the Appropriate Thickness

Try to ensure that the plaster is applied evenly across the entire surface. Avoid applying a single layer that is too thick just to cover a very uneven wall.

If the surface irregularities are significant, the leveling process should be carried out using an appropriate method to ensure that the plaster layer does not experience excessive drying stress in any one area.
